A visit with the whoopers

For the second year, we made the trip to Fulton, Texas, to visit the magnificent whooping cranes before they make their flight north to Canada for the summer.  Once again, we toured with Captain Tommy on the Skimmer.  This time, however, we departed the harbor at 7:30 a.m. instead of taking the afternoon cruise.  Our reward was some up-close time with a number of beautiful whooping cranes as they dined on blue crabs in the marshes along the barrier islands.  We were fortunate to have a representative on board from the Crane Foundation is Wisconsin who shared a wealth of information about these rare birds.

While in South Texas, we enjoyed a wonderful afternoon on the beach in Port Aransas.  We always love to see the white dunes after the brown beaches in Galveston. We also toured the USS Lexington in Corpus Christi.  The tour requires climbing lots of steep stairs, but the effort is worth it!
